Tennis teams compete in Hilton Head

HILTON HEAD, S.C. – The Heidelberg University tennis teams competed in South Carolina over Spring Break, each playing four matches. Both teams finished the week with a pair of victories, as the women swept both FDU-Florham and Frostburg State while the men defeated Frostburg State and Thomas (ME).

Ben Moore led the men for the week, going a perfect 4-0 while competing at second singles. All four of his victories came in straight sets, including a dominating 6-0, 6-0 win over Teron Tyre of FSU. Moore also teamed up with freshman Jonathan Long to go 3-1 at first doubles.

Long had a solid week himself, going 3-1 while competing at first singles. He opened his week with a hard-fought 3-6, 6-3, 1-0 (10-3) win against Thomas (ME) before winning in straight sets in his other two victories.

Tyler Flickinger also had a perfect 4-0 week, playing third singles for the Berg. Kyle Simpson had a pair of wins at sixth singles while Dan Driscoll picked up one win while playing at fifth singles.

In other doubles action, Driscoll and Paul Claymier had a pair of wins while Flickinger and freshman Austin Buckhalter picked up a win against Thomas (ME).

On the women's side, Sofey Fugate led the team with a 3-1 mark at first singles. She opened the week strong with a 6-0, 6-0 win against Concordia (Wis.) before earning two more straight-sets victories against FDU-Florham and Frostburg State. She partnered with Nicole Millar to post a 3-1 record at first doubles as well.

Markilynn Hogle went 3-1 as well, playing at third singles. Her wins included a tough 7-6 (7-3), 4-6, 1-0 (10-7) victory in her first singles match of the week.

Allie Gales (4th singles), Allison Costantino (5th), and Catherine Harris (6th) each posted a pair of wins in singles action as well for the Student Princes.

Both the men's and women's tennis teams will be back in action on Saturday, April 2nd when they take on Mount Union. The men will host the Purple Raiders in Tiffin at 1:00 p.m. while the women will travel to Alliance for a 1:00 p.m. start as well.
