WESTERVILLE, Ohio – The Heidelberg University track and field teams claimed three titles and broke two school records at the All-Ohio Championships at Otterbein University on Saturday. The women's team finished seventh out of 18 schools and the men's team placed 10th out of 19 squads.
Both teams improved on their standing from a year ago by five spots. In 2013, the men finished 15th and the women finished 12th.
For the women's team, Sophie Goobic continued her torrid senior season by winning the 5000m run. With a time of 17:46.23, Goobic won the race by more than 10 seconds.
On her final throw in the shot put, Madison Haasz clinched a victory with mark of 12.82m. She edged out Baldwin Wallace's Kim Gallavan, whose first throw of 12.54m was the mark to beat.
Haasz also finished third in the weight throw with a mark of 15.37m.
Freshman Dani Blum set a school record in the 3000m run with a time of 10:37.45. Blum's time put her in sixth place.
Blum, Bobbi Custer, Allie Dresser and Hayley Cochran re-set their own school record in the distance medley. Their time, 12:49.11, was a full 10 seconds better than their previous best. The quartet placed fourth.
Individually, Custer scored points for the team by taking sixth in the 400m dash with a time of 1:00.53.
Bethany Beaver also contributed a sixth place finish. The freshman ran the 60m dash in 8.19s.
The men's team was led by senior Josh Lynch. Lynch won the triple jump, his signature event, with a mark of 14.57m. He also placed second in the high jump (1.94m) and fourth in the long jump (6.86m).
In the weight throw, Gage Falcone took home a fourth place finish with a throw of 15.71m.
David Kindall's sixth place finish in the one-mile run (4:27.71) and Zach Felton's eighth place finish in the shot put (13.81m) rounded on the scoring for the men's team.
Both teams will compete at Capital University next weekend.
