UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS, Ohio – The Heidelberg University volleyball team swept John Carroll on Tuesday night, winning 25-21, 25-18, 25-18. In doing so, the Student Princes remain undefeated in OAC play and have clinched a piece of the regular season title.
Senior Amber Welfle led the Student Princes with 12 kills and 11 digs.
After a slow start, Heidelberg (16-13, 8-0 OAC) took their first lead of the evening on a Sarah Parker kill that made the score 18-17. After the teams traded points, The Berg closed out the first set with a 5-1 run.
The second set started with a 4-0 'Berg run which prompted a timeout from John Carroll (18-10, 4-4 OAC). Heidelberg kept a sizeable lead throughout the set, withstanding a 5-0 run by the Blue Streaks that cut the HU advantage to 22-17. After a timeout called by head coach Jason Miller, Heidelberg closed out the set.
A four-point deficit in the middle of the third set prompted another timeout by John Carroll. The Blue Streaks responded to tie the match at 16. A service error sent the momentum back to the Student Princes, who closed out the match with an 8-2 run.
Jamie Kluding added nine kills and two aces for Heidelberg. A pair of Sarahs, Botts and Parker, each added eight kills.
The regular season concludes at home against Mount Union on Saturday. With a win, Heidelberg will win the OAC regular season title outright and will claim the top seed in next week's OAC tournament. A loss will give The Berg a share of the title with Mount Union, but the Purple Raiders would enter the tournament as the first seed.
