Volleyball sweeps a pair in Bluffton

BLUFFTON – After splitting a pair of matches on Friday, the Heidelberg University volleyball team rebounded and swept two matches at the Sommer Center Spiketacular. Notching 70 kills on the weekend, sophomore outside hitter Sarah Parker was named to the All-Tournament team.

In Saturday's first match, the Student Princes defeated Albion College (0-3) – 25-15, 25-15, 25-21. Parker led the offensive attack with 17 kills. Senior setter Stephanie Romie recorded a double-double, finishing with 29 assists and 11 digs. Defensive specialist Grace Samenuk had a team-high 14 digs. Megan Flaherty recorded 10 digs in the win. Head coach Jason Miller was able to rotate 16 players onto the court in the victory.

Heidelberg (3-1) won the second match – 25-20, 25-16, 26-24 – over Geneva College (1-2). Parker tallied 11 kills and Romie had 12 assists. The Berg had double-digit dig efforts from Samenuk (25) and Flaherty (11). Janessa Scott and Olivia Hipp each had three blocks.

"We saw a lot of improvement from yesterday, but there is still a lot that we can improve," said Miller. "I'm looking forward to getting back in the gym on Monday."

For the opening weekend, Romie totaled 140 assists and Samenuk had 81 digs. Mariah Sullivan led the team with 11 blocks.

The Student Princes will head to Cincinnati next weekend to participate in the College of Mount St. Joseph's Charlie Wrublewski Tournament. Heidelberg will face Westminster (Mo.) on Friday before seeing the host Lions and Thomas More on Saturday.
