Volleyball falls to pair of top-10 opponents

SPRINGFIELD – The Heidelberg University volleyball team took on a pair of top-10 opponents at the Wittenberg Fall Classic on Saturday. The first match of the day against #5 Cal Lutheran saw the Student Princes unable to get off to a good start and falling in three sets, while the second match, against #10 Washington (Mo.), was much of the same.

The first two sets of the match against Cal Lutheran didn't go quite as planned for Heidelberg, as they hung around early and couldn't keep in it at the end. In the third set, the Student Princes put up a fight, but still fell by a final score of 26-24.

Jamie Kluding led the Heidelberg attack with 11 kills while Sarah Parker chipped in eight. Stephanie Romie recorded 29 of the team's 33 assists and Grace Samenuk led the Student Princes with 16 digs.

The second match of the day matched up the 'Berg with 10th-ranked Washington (Mo.), and the Student Princes came out strong, battling in the first set and taking leads of 14-11 and 15-12. Despite these leads, Heidelberg wasn't able to hold on, dropping that set en route to a three set defeat.

The 'Berg offense was led by Janessa Scott with nine kills while Parker added on seven. Romie continued to rack up assists with 24, with Samenuk tallying 15 digs.

With their record now standing at 5-6 on the season, Heidelberg will open Ohio Athletic Conference play this Tuesday, September 16, when they host Otterbein for their first home match of the 2014 season. That match is set to begin at 7:00 p.m. in Seiberling Gymnasium.
