Volleyball can't close out JCU, falls in five sets

TIFFIN – The Heidelberg volleyball team lost a thrilling five-set match to John Carroll University on Tuesday -- 20-25, 25-20, 21-25, 25-22, 15-13 – on Dig Pink night in Seiberling Gymnasium.

First Set

John Carroll (17-5, 3-1 OAC) came out strong, taking a 7-2 lead. Heidelberg (14-11, 3-2 OAC) responded with a 9-2 run to grab the lead. The set bounced back and forth until Heidelberg closed on a 9-4 run, capped by a kill from Stephanie Romie.

Second Set

Leading 11-10, the Blue Streaks took the next six points and cruised to a win. The six-point swing was highlighted by two kills from JCU's Sarah Orlandi and Kit O'Shaughnessy.

Third Set

The Student Princes trailed through a majority of the third set, but got back to even at 16 on a kill by Mikaela Weldy. Two kills by Jamie Kluding and two aces by Olivia Hipp propelled the Student Princes.

Fourth Set

Looking to close out JCU, The Berg held a 21-18 edge after an empathic kill by Janessa Scott. Two HU errors gave momentum back to the Blue Streaks, who closed the set on a 7-1 run.

Fifth Set

In the early stages on the deciding set, John Carroll controlled the action. Two mini-runs gave JCU a commanding 12-6 lead.

Then Heidelberg stormed back. Two Kluding kills and two JCU attack errors on long points breathed life into the pink-clad Heidelberg faithful. After a Blue Streak timeout, two more attack errors tied the match at 12.

Following another timeout, Alexa Webber atoned for three errors in the set by a kill set down right in front of Heidelberg libero Jubilee Haase. A Heidelberg error put the visitors on the brink of victory. On the first match point, Kluding knocked down another kill. On the second match point, however, Leah Switalski's attack down the line fell in, clinching the win.

The Box Score

Sarah Parker had a match-high 19 kills and attacked at a .275 clip.

Heidelberg won the battle at the net, out blocking JCU, 9-4.

Romie notched 47 kills on the night, her second-highest total in her career.

Kluding finished with 13 kills and eight digs.

Defensively, Haase led the way with 21 digs. Grace Samenuk and Megan Flaherty had 13 and 11 digs respectively.

A tough test awaits the Student Princes on Saturday, as the 21-1 Purple Raiders of Mount Union travel to Tiffin. The match is scheduled for a 4 p.m. start.
