TIFFIN – Coming off a loss that snapped their seven-match winning streak, the Heidelberg University volleyball team was not going to let anyone stand in their way to get back on track, not even a top-10 opponent. The Berg came out on fire, took advantage of mistakes and dominated their way to a sweep of #6 Mount Union, handing them their first OAC loss of the season.
The first set did not start off in an ideal way, as the Purple Raiders (21-4, 4-1 OAC) jumped out to an early 7-4 advantage, but Heidelberg was able to rally for three straight points thanks to a couple of attack errors. From there, the two teams would battle back and forth until the Student Princes held a 22-21 lead near the end of the set, running off three straight points to close out the opening-set win.
The second set opened up like the first, with both teams battling back and forth, with the score sitting at 11-11. Heidelberg then went on a run pushing the lead out to 17-11 before Mount Union scored again. At this point, sophomore Mariah Sullivan came up to serve, and the Student Princes did not look back, scoring the final eight points, including three aces by Sullivan.
The third set was back to being a battle, but Heidelberg got out to a 13-9 lead early on. They held that margin throughout, going back and forth the rest of the way to finish off the sweep, winning the third set 25-20.
Heidelberg took advantage of a plethora of mistakes by the Purple Raiders, who had 10 service errors and 20 attacking errors.
The attack for the Berg was well-spread out on the day, with Sarah Parker and Jamie Kluding leading the team in kills with nine apiece. Sullivan and Stephanie Romie had seven and six kills, respectively, with both having a hitting percentage of .500.
Romie led the team with 23 assists, while Jubilee Haase had a team-high 11 digs.
Sullivan, Parker, and Sarah Botts all tied for the team-lead with three blocks each.
Following the win, Heidelberg improved to 15-11 on the season, including a 4-2 mark in Ohio Athletic Conference play. They will take to the road for their next match, traveling to Ohio Northern for another OAC contest on Tuesday, October 21. That match is scheduled to begin at 7:00 p.m. in Ada.
