Parker reaches 1,000 career kills as Volleyball splits

HOLLAND, Michigan – The Heidelberg University volleyball team split a pair of matches in Michigan for the second straight day. The Student Princes swept Kalamazoo College then were swept by No. 14 Hope College.  In the win over Kalamazoo, Sarah Parker surpassed the 1,000 career kill mark, becoming just the 10th player in Heidelberg history to reach that milestone.

Heidelberg (12-5) dominated Kalamazoo, winning 25-19, 25-15, 25-17. The Student Princes attacked at a .308 clip in the match. All-American Sarah Parker had 14 kills and no errors, attacking at .700. Jamie Kluding added nine kills and Morgan Strenk and Janessa Scott contributed eight apiece.

Karlie DiRuzza tallied 32 assists and contributed 11 digs. Rachel Raimondo (15 digs) and Megan Mills (13 kills) led the defensive effort. Laura Schrag and Strenk each had two blocks.

As a team, Kalamazoo hit .133.

In the second team, perennial power Hope College edged the Tricolor, 25-17, 25-21, 25-20. Hope held Heidelberg to an hitting percentage of .095.

Despite the tough Hope defense, Parker still registered 16 kills. Strenk added seven in the loss. DiRuzza dished out 29 assists.

Four Student Princes reached double-figures in digs – Raimondo (18), DiRuzza (14), Kluding (12) and Mills (12).

Heidelberg returns to action next weekend. They travel to Bethany College (WV) to face the Bison and Denison University.
