Volleyball picked to finish third in the OAC

Following a 23-10 (8-1 OAC) season and a second-place finish in the OAC tournament, head coach Jason Miller and the Heidelberg volleyball team will take to the court with unfinished business.

Despite the departure of a talented senior class, the Berg will strive to continue their excellence. Leading the charge this year will be returning senior Rachel Raimondo, who led the Tricolor last year with 675 digs. The Mentor native was an AVCA All-American and the OAC Libero of the year in 2016. Raimondo, who has also been an influential leader for the team, will be joined by fellow senior Rachel Stroski.

Alongside Raimondo and Stroksi is a strong and experienced junior class, led by Sydney Moore, who will look to build upon her 264 digs from last year with an increased role for the 2017 campaign. Morgan Strenk and Laura Schrag are back, both of whom were key components in the kills department a year ago.

The sophomore class, that features more than 10 student-athletes, will be competing heavily for varsity action. Led by Taylor Valentine and Anna McNabb, the group will have their eyes set on gaining valuable experience this year.

In addition, Heidelberg will welcome a strong group of freshmen to the program who will compete for time in the rotation.

The season will begin on the road against Hanover on Friday in Bluffton. The Student Princes will play four games in two days as part of the Sommer Center Spiketacular.

The newly renovated Seiberling Gymnasium will allow HU to play host to the No One Fights Alone Invitational, to be held Sept. 8-9. The Berg will welcome three competitive volleyball programs – Thomas More, Wittenberg, and Bluffton. The matches will serve as the home opener for the Berg, with the first slated for a 7:30 p.m. tussle with TMC on the 8th.

The Student Princes were picked to finish third in the OAC preseason poll, just behind Ohio Northern and Mount Union.

Heidelberg hosts Muskingum for its OAC opener, scheduled for Sept. 30. Conference action is highlighted by a matchup with defending OAC Regular Season and Tournament Champion Ohio Northern. The Oct. 10 match will be held in Tiffin.
