TIFFIN -- Behind a 17-kill effort by #17 Morgan Strenk, the Heidelberg University volleyball team swept Denison University -- 25-17, 25-13, 26-24 -- on Tuesday. Strenk attacked at a .593 clip, tallying her most kills since a 19-kill night against Baldwin Wallace last season.
Heidelberg snapped a two-match losing skid and improved to 8-5 on the season. The Big Red fell to 5-5.
Defensively, libero Taylor Arbogast had a game-high 26 digs on the night.
Seven straight points in the first set propelled the Tricolor from an 8-8 tie to a comfortable 15-8 cushion. From there, Denison would get back to within four at 19-15, but three straight points helped Heidelberg maintain their edge.
The second set was dominated by the hosts, who moved to 2-0 at home on the season. Heidelberg attacked at .314 and held Denison to -.037. The Student Princes didn't produce any monster runs, but used several four-point swings and a sideout percentage of 69% to pick up the 25-13 win.
Denison's best effort came in the third set, using a 5-0 run to amass a sizable advantage. Down 20-14, HU cut into the deficit with a kill by Alyssa Crusey and two by Strenk. Later, trailing 23-20, a Laura Schrag soft kill capped a 3-0 run to tie the match. After Denison took a 24-23 lead, The Berg responded with kills by Schrag, Crusey and Feczer to seal the win.
For the match, Heidelberg hit .290 while Denison hit .089.
The Student Princes stay home this weekend, playing four varsity matches and three JV matches as part of the second annual No One Fights Alone Invitational at Seiberling Gymnasium. HU plays Wooster and Case Western Reserve on Friday, Mount St. Joseph and Hanover on Saturday.
