BEREA -- The Heidelberg University volleyball team was bounced from the OAC Tournament by No. 4 Baldwin Wallace University on the road in the first round on Tuesday evening in yet another five set thriller. After taking the first two sets, Berg found themselves heading into the fifth set for the fourth time in OAC competition this season -- sixth time this season. Unfortunately for the Berg, they have found themselves on the wrong end of each of those four OAC matches.
With the loss (25-22, 25-22, 20-25, 21-25, 12-15), Heidelberg concluded their season with an overall record of 20-10. With the victory, Baldwin Wallace will travel to face the top seed, Ohio Northern University after the Polar Bears knocked off No. 8 Marietta College this evening in straight sets.
Heidelberg has found themselves in a familiar position all season long, constantly battling for every point over the course of their matches. Tonight was no different. The Berg took the first two sets, but was troubled along the way as BW made every point difficult.
In the third and fourth sets, the Yellow Jackets held the edge on the Student Princes. In set three, the Tricolor found themselves down 24-16, but behind a string of services by Anna McNabb, HU brought the score to 24-20, before a BW kill sealed the set.
Heidelberg continued to exchange points with BW and make things interesting over the fourth, but the Yellow Jackets eventually found the difference late on, taking the frame, 25-21.
The Student Princes jumped out to an 8-4 lead in the fifth set, forcing the switch of court. Unfortunately, the Yellow Jackets went on a 7-0 run, gaining a crucial 11-8 advantage in the set. After a brief exchange in points, BW sealed the game on a Berg attack error.
For Heidelberg, three hitters reach double-digits as the team smashed 65 over the duration of the match. Taylor Valentine nailed 20 kills, Laura Schrag collected 18, and Morgan Strenk slammed 12. In her role of facilitation, McNabb set up 54 assists.
Unfortunately, the Student Princes committed 55 total errors on the evening, making things considerably tougher.
In other OAC play, No. 3 Muskingum swept No. 6 Mount Union, while No. 2 Otterbein strolled to victory over No. 7 John Carroll in three sets.
The Student Princes concluded their season 20-10 overall, and 5-4 in the OAC regular season which earned them the fifth seed in the conference tournament.
